Accept Me

I am different and so are you
Accept me without further ado
I thought it was easy to accept you
But I do not get your point of view

You started deciding things for me
Setting rules without letting me free
Trust me for once and cut me loose
The freedom you give; I'll not misuse

Do not think I am vulnerable and weak
I am strong in my own way and unique
I agree it is not easy and I make you sad
Try talking to me without getting mad

I am who I am; I can never become you
Can’t we come to terms and start anew
I crave for your acceptance all the way through
Do understand, I am different and so are you!

Dedicated to all those who are being judged for who they are!

  1. This is one of the best poems I have ever read. I was reading this poem with tears in my eyes. This is exactly how I felt when I was a kid.....

Excellent job akka. I am very proud of you....

Thanks for sharing this poem with me.

  2. Hey Pebu,

    A lil flash back:

I attended Parent Academy 101 at my son's school. His Principal was talking about dyslexia and how each kid is unique in his/her own learning capabilities.

This poem was initially inspired by those kids. But I made the poem generic to all those kids who are being judged for their choices in one way or the other.

It feels really nice when some one says my poem touched their hearts or reminded them of some phase in their life. That is the best compliment for my work.

I am back to writing after almost a year and feels great to get such compliments! Assures me that I can continue writing ;-)

  4. Hey Madhu, This is a lovely poem. I was trying to relate this with what Maanya does and how we try to force her to do what we like. :(

Yes, everyone is different and we need to accept them as they are.

  5. That was so good. Do you know that sometimes, in situations like these, ppl judge you even for the best qualities that you have; making you wonder to the contrary. It is a very big self-esteem buster.

  8. Thanks Sireesha. Yeah, I know. Parent's expectations are increasing a lot with each generation I guess :) We too try to impose certain things on our son but one good thing is we retreat very quickly knowing that we are not doing right. We are learning as parents too :)

  9. Hey Poonam,

I understand what you are saying. I have been in such circumstances a few times myself and you tend to question your strengths :(
